The postpartum phase of the childbearing year is often considered the “fourth trimester”. It is hard to define just how long a woman is postpartum. Six weeks? A year? Some say that it takes three years for a mother to fully recover from childbirth! This is an important time with lots of transitions that we are usually unprepared for.
A postpartum doula is a non-clinical caregiver, with a calm presence in your home. Focusing on the well-being of the mother after childbirth, we inform, encourage and support parents in trusting their instincts and meeting the needs of themselves, their newborns and the family.
In traditional cultures, men and women grow up surrounded by birth, breastfeeding and children; 40 days after the birth is seen as absolutely necessary for full recuperation, and community members provide strong social support during that time.
Our intent is to be part of that tribe for the modern family by providing compassionate postpartum and newborn parenting support and offering connections to resources in the community.
More than a baby nurse or mother’s helper, our goal as doulas is to honor the needs and abilities of new mothers during postpartum transitions. We value each family’s experience as unique and respect the choices they make for themselves. We help ensure that mama and baby are happily connected, and that all family members integrate the new baby with greater confidence.
We are aware of the special concerns of teens, single mothers, adoptive parents, same-sex couples and enjoy working with all family structures!
